This book does have some high ratings on Goodreads but I didn’t have very high expectations regardless of this. I had good expectations but they weren’t too high so based on how I feel I think they were meet. This was a good story and I loved it as a retelling, I think it stands out from other retellings by the simple fact that it’s so close to the original story. In most retellings it’s taking the basic concept and adding to their story, but here it’s taking the original story and making it their own. I also found the addition of books even thought they don’t play a very big part but I’m glade they made an appearance because there such an iconic part of Beauty and the Beast.
The characters were very enjoyable in this story, Yeva was a great character to read from, I love how she is similar in Belle in the way that she deeply cares for others but she is still uniquely her own person. In the short breaks in between chapters where you read from the beast, you can really see his struggles. From the beginning I became fond of Solmir but I was worried that he might cast in a similar role as Gaston, in a minor way I think he was in being a suitor of Yeva’s but I’m glade that is the only resemblance accept being a hunter. Yeva’s sisters were great, especially Asenka because of her dedication to her beliefs and others which is really shown towards the end of the book.
When I was about half way thought the book I was thinking that I wish the book was so one-dimensional, most books I think are too compleicated and that can make it hard to follow but I thought that this was a little too simple. I felt this way through a majority of the book but I’m happy to say that about 70% through the book it starts to become more complex, I do wish that it happened sooner but in my opinion it saved the story.
The beast world (and the world from Yeva’s fairy tales was such an amazing one, but I wish we got to explore it more, I understand why this wasn’t done because of the story but I would love it if Megan Spooner wrote another book were we got to expand on it. The ending wasn’t the worst but I wish there was more to it, how everything happened was fine but it was the epilogue that bothered me, it seemed like it was a little rushed. I feel that was more on the writing and not the events, other than this I had no issues with this book and I’m glade I finally decided to read it.
