I can’t believe that it took me this long to read this book, it was absolutely amazing, I love how Sabaa Tahir’s mind works. There is one thing that I ended up not liking about this book that I hope will be remedied in the sequel. The problem that I have is the world building in this book I think was lacking a little bit, I think that you don’t get a chance to really explore and learn much about the world that these characters live in. Other than that I loved it, and I gave it 5 stars because the rest of the book makes up for it enough for me.
The characters in this book were amazing, and their development is wonderful. I fell in love with both Elias and Laia early on in this book, they are such amazing people who are in different ways haunted by things they did in the past. I think that they will have the capacity to help the other through it, so if it isn’t obvious I’m shipping them. I didn’t like Helene at all, I though that she was abrasive to others especially Laia, but now I think that it might be due because of potential relationship between Laia and Elias. Keenan I think is ok, I’m not really a big fan of him but there isn’t really anything that I like about him. Mazen I was never a fan of and I never trusted him, he seemed like he was hiding something but I wasn’t sure what.
I don’t believe what the commandment is doing, trusting someone like that is obviously a bad idea, anyone with two brain cells would know that. My favorite scene in this book was after the third trial and Elias spent the night in his room with Laia and they sat there and talked also there kiss was so captivating.
The ending to this book was so wonderful, I loved every bit of it, also I ended up not disliking Helene as much but I still ain’t her biggest fan. I think that now that they are traveling together that it will give them a chance for their relationship to grow. I ordered A Torch Against the Night and I can’t wait to get to read it, I’m so excited, it’s going to be epic, I have herd great things about it.
